Company Overview
Microsoft is a global leader in the development of enterprise software. As part of the implementation of high
profile customers, Microsoft uses their consulting services to help implement their enterprise software.
As part of Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) services, Microsoft engages their partners to supplement their
services.
Synopsis
Microsoft BizTalk server is an enterprise integration and orchestration product used to connect systems within
the enterprise and between businesses.
Microsoft engaged a global 100 manufacturing company to implement a prototype BizTalk solution for transfer of
product marketing data to distribution partners.
The solution was also to be developed as an ideal service oriented architecture (SOA) implementation. Using web
services, Microsoft lead the development of a composition oriented services solution with services aggregated
from atomic services.
Microsoft used the Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) to develop a prototype solution followed by the completion
of a production quality implementation.
Solution
When the initial prototyping stage was completed, competing architectural views as well as unclear understanding
of the core requirements led to team division and ultimately a reorganization of the development team.
Microsoft engaged Triton-Tek to join the project at an architectural and implementation perspective. Triton-Tek
had prior experience working with the customer and understood the needs to deliver a solution within the timeframe
while trying to maintain an SOA solution as much as possible.
With the team reorganization and clear vision Microsoft and Triton-Tek provided, the solution regained its
direction and was completed within the required timeframe.
Triton-Tek helped clarify the vision of the solution implementing a multi-tier web services architecture that
lead to services being consumed by Microsoft BizTalk. The solution then uses BizTalk services to transform and
transmit the customer formatted data to distributors.
Results
While the implementation had a difficult beginning, the results of the project were delivered on-time and
on-budget. The solution created an extensible and flexible system that allows for additional distributors with
custom translation requirements to be easily implemented.
The success of the project that Triton-Tek and Microsoft developed led the customer to engage in larger scale
SOA projects because of the benefits of reuse and interoperability.
The client is now successfully engaged with over 30 web services used throughout a variety of projects.
